Question 1

Can I get a document notarized online?

Accepted Answer

Yes. In states that allow remote online notarization, you can have many documents notarized online through a secure video session with a commissioned electronic notary. Notary Pop connects you with a notary who can complete the notarization remotely, so you don't have to travel to a physical office.

Question 2

What is an online notary?

Accepted Answer

An online notary is a commissioned notary public who is authorized to perform notarizations electronically over the internet. Instead of meeting in person, you connect with the notary through a live video call, verify your identity, and sign your document electronically while the notary watches and applies their electronic seal.

Question 3

What is remote online notarization?

Accepted Answer

Remote online notarization (RON) is the process of having a document notarized over a live audio-video connection rather than in person. It uses identity verification, electronic signatures, and an electronic notary seal to complete the notarization securely from wherever you are.

Question 4

How does online notarization work?

Accepted Answer

The process is simple. You upload your document, verify your identity, and join a live video session with a commissioned notary. The notary confirms your identity and willingness to sign, you sign the document electronically, and the notary applies their electronic seal. You receive your notarized document right away. You can see the full steps on our How It Works page.

Question 5

Is online notarization legal?

Accepted Answer

Remote online notarization is legal in many states, though the rules vary from state to state. Some states have permanent laws allowing it, while others have adopted it more recently. Whether online notarization is available for your document depends on the laws that apply to your situation and the notary's commission.

Question 6

What do I need for an online notary session?

Accepted Answer

You'll need a device with a camera and microphone (a computer, tablet, or smartphone), a stable internet connection, and a valid government-issued photo ID for identity verification. You'll also need the document you want notarized, usually as a PDF you can upload.

Question 7

How is my identity verified?

Accepted Answer

Identity is verified through a combination of methods, typically including a government-issued photo ID and knowledge-based authentication questions. The notary also sees you live on video, which lets them confirm the person signing matches the ID presented.

Question 8

How long does online notarization take?

Accepted Answer

Most online notarization sessions are quick — often just a few minutes once you're connected. The exact time depends on the document and how prepared you are, but the video session itself is usually short and straightforward.

Question 9

What documents can be notarized online?

Accepted Answer

Many common documents can be notarized online, including affidavits, powers of attorney, loan documents, and more. Whether a specific document qualifies depends on the laws that apply to it. See our Documents We Notarize page for a helpful overview.

Question 10

Can a power of attorney be notarized online?

Accepted Answer

In many cases, yes. Powers of attorney can often be notarized online, but the rules depend on the state and the type of power of attorney. It's always a good idea to confirm that online notarization is accepted for your specific document before you start.

Question 11

Can an affidavit be notarized online?

Accepted Answer

Yes, affidavits are commonly notarized online. As with any document, whether online notarization is accepted depends on the laws that apply to your situation and the notary's commission.

Question 12

Do I need special software?

Accepted Answer

No. Notary Pop runs in your web browser, so you don't need to install special software. You just need a device with a camera and microphone, a stable internet connection, and your government-issued photo ID.

Question 13

Where does the notary need to be located?

Accepted Answer

The notary must be commissioned in the state where they perform the notarization, and they perform it from within that state. The rules about where you, the signer, need to be located can differ depending on the state and the specific transaction, so it's best to confirm the requirements that apply to your situation.
